Mount St. Helens is a destination where the geology isn’t hidden beneath the scenery—the geology is the scenery. Few places in the United States offer the opportunity to explore a landscape transformed by a major geologic event within living memory.

 

Mount St. Helens combines Cascade mountain ambiance with an active volcano, blast deposits, lava tubes, debris-avalanche deposits, young lakes, and a landscape still recovering from the famous 1980 eruption. My parents had visited 2 months before the eruption….talk about timing is everything! I had the opportunity to hike around it as a teenager in the ‘90s and can’t wait to go back!

Mount St. Helens is an active Cascade Range stratovolcano, formed as the Juan de Fuca Plate subducts beneath North America. Although volcanic activity here began roughly 275,000 years ago, much of the modern cone developed during the past several thousand years.

 

Earthquake and eruption:

  • On May 18, 1980, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake triggered the collapse of the volcano’s unstable north flank.

  • The landslide rapidly depressurized the underlying magma system, producing the famous lateral blast followed by pyroclastic flows, and widespread ashfall.

  • The eruption removed roughly 1,300 feet from the summit and created the horseshoe-shaped crater visible today.

  • Volcanism continued after 1980, including lava-dome growth through 1986 and another eruptive episode from 2004–2008.

Today, the mountain provides an exceptional natural laboratory for studying volcanology, mass wasting, glacial processes, and landscape recovery. A geohazard geologist's dream!

Trip Tips: Can't-Miss Hiking and Tourist Stops

The north side of the volcano offers the best look at the devastation from 1980.

  • Around Coldwater Lake, visitors can see debris-avalanche terrain, blast deposits, and areas where forests and ecosystems continue to recover.

  • Coldwater Lake formed when debris from the eruption blocked the area’s existing drainage.

On the south side, don’t miss Ape Cave, a roughly 1,900-year-old lava tube formed by basaltic lava flows.

  • It provides a completely different perspective on Mount St. Helens and demonstrates that the volcano’s history includes both explosive eruptions and relatively fluid basaltic lava flows.

Road access around the volcano can change because of landslides, snow, and construction, so check current conditions before visiting.

 

Where to Stay

  • Castle Rock: The best base for exploring the north and west sides of the monument.
  • Cougar: A better base for Ape Cave, Lava Canyon, Yale Lake, and the south side.
  • Look for local cabins and vacation rentals for a more scenic alternative to traditional hotels.

  • Peper’s 49ER Restaurant—Castle Rock: Classic breakfast before heading into the monument.
  • Papa Pete’s Pizza–Castle Rock: Easy casual option after a day of hiking.
