In my brain, mercury ore pretty much meant cinnabar. I had never really considered anything else. But on a recent trip to Slovenia, I stumbled across a story that I obsessed over for months.
A mining town called Idrija operated for more than 500 years with a significant portion of its ore occurring as native mercury—little silver droplets of mercury that appear on the surface of the rock!
The native mercury was one of the craziest things I’ve seen in a long time, and I’m so excited to share this story with you.

Geology of Idrija, Slovenia

Idrija is a small town in western Slovenia with an outsized place in mining history. For centuries, it was one of the world’s most important mercury-producing districts. Today, its mining heritage is recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Almadén, Spain.
Area geology: The rocks in the Idrija region record hundreds of millions of years of geologic history, and the mercury's story really comes down to tectonics, faults, and hot fluids.
Around 238 million years ago, this region was being pulled apart by normal faulting.
Blocks of rock moved up and down, creating fault-bounded basins and pathways deep into the crust.
In one of these tectonic trenches, hot, mercury-rich fluids rose along faults and moved through older sedimentary rocks.
As those fluids cooled and reacted with the surrounding rocks, they formed mercury ore—mostly cinnabar, the bright red mercury sulfide mineral.
Idrija is especially fascinating because the deposit also contains native mercury, meaning mercury in its elemental form. Instead of just red cinnabar, you can see tiny metallic droplets of mercury on the rock!
Idrija sits within the External Dinarides, where major thrusting, folding, and faulting later shuffled rock layers into a complex structure.
One of the most important features is the Idrija Fault, a major fault zone that cuts across Slovenia.

I would budget at least a weekend to visit the area around Idrija. Here are some ways to see the sites:
Visit the Gewerkenegg Castle: Idrija’s municipal museum has fantastic exhibits on the town’s mining history, local rocks and minerals, the mercury story, connections with Almadén, Spain, and Idrija’s famous lace-making tradition. Gewerkenegg Castle is also where many town tours begin.
Tour rec: We purchased the “Explore UNESCO World Heritage” package from Visit Idrija, which included several historical sites around town.
Dig into Anthony’s Main Road Mine: This is one of the oldest preserved mine entrances in Europe, excavated around 1500. The underground tour lasts about an hour and a half, with a jacket, hard hat, and audio guide provided.
Tour the Hg Smelting Plant: This was one of my favorite stops because smelting and processing are parts of the mining story you don’t always get to see on mine tours! The museum is interactive, and the preserved smelting facility gives you a look at the mercury-processing side of Idrija’s history.
Hike to Wild Lake: This place is a karst lake above a cave system, and it can get especially “wild” after rain, when water and air can surge up from below and create a mushroom-like effect on the lake surface.
The Rake Trail follows the Idrijca River past historical structures, geologic points, and interpretive signs.
